Grinding media are available in different materials, each chosen based on their hardness, resistance properties, and application suitability. Zirconia balls, with a Mohs hardness greater than 9.0, are extremely wear-resistant, chemically inert, and capable of withstanding high temperatures and corrosion. They are best used with zirconia, PTFE, nylon, corundum, PU, and tungsten carbide jars, making them suitable for high-purity applications such as advanced ceramics and pharmaceuticals. Stainless steel balls, with a hardness above 6.0, offer good wear and corrosion resistance and are ideal for general-purpose milling of metallic or abrasive materials when paired with stainless steel jars.

Stirred ball mills provide key advantages over traditional ball mills, including the ability to achieve much finer particle sizes, often reaching the sub-micron or nanometer range.
